In a very rare 19th century design named after Sir Joseph Paxton, notable gardener architect and engineer, this is a lovely hand-forged and double-struck antique set of sterling silver cutlery for 12 people made by George Adams, the premier silver flatware maker of the Victorian era.
Reflecting his life as a gardener, and the Victorian aesthetic, the Paxton pattern is elaborate and features a central flower motif with trailing and scrolling foliate that forms a shield, while a gothic border surrounds the design. Double struck means that the pattern is forged on both sides of the cutlery and is a sign of superior quality and gauge of sterling silver.
Paxton was a distinguished architect, engineer and head gardener at Chatsworth House, one of Britain's finest stately homes where built The Great Conservatory (cultivating the Cavendish banana, today the most consumed banana in the Western world) that would become the test-bed for the prefabricated glass and iron structural techniques which Paxton pioneered and employed for his masterpiece, The Crystal Palace for the Great Exhibition in England in 1851.
