A documented mid-17th century brass trumpet-base candlestick, English, circa 1650
REF: 5120
Of trumpet form, the upper stem with broad flange and medial knop, over a ring-incised drip tray and a spreading base with stepped foot
Provenance: Ronald F. Michaelis Collection. Sold, his collection, Sotheby's 1 November 1979, Lot 42, purchased by A. Bishop (£380)
Literature: This candlestick is illustrated on the front cover, R. F. Michaelis, 'Old Domestic Base Metal Candlesticks' (1978/1984), top left, and pp. 81-82, figs. 111 & 113. The author notes the ridge to the upper stem is not purely decorative, it has a functional use. Namely, to strengthen the pillar against crushing, it also allows a purchase point for lifting. Later examples tend to be fully ribbed, to provide even greater strength
