A needlework coverlet, English, circa 1905-30

REF: 1040

Sold

Worked in natural-dyed wools in a flame-stitch or bargello design with tied tassel fringe to all sides.

Provenance: This coverlet is reputed to have originated in Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire. Therefore it may possibly link to either the influential weaver, spinner and dyer Ethel Mairet (1872-1952), or her pupil Eileen Baker. Mairet was a friend of Charles Robert Ashbee, founder of the Guild of Handicraft, and trained Eileen Baker to weave. Eileen and her husband Leo went on to establish The Kingsley Weavers (fl.1926-1931), Chipping Campden, where they employed local women to make hand-woven, vegetable dyed textiles.
