A rare George II joined oak and inlaid side table, Vale of Glamorgan/Pembrokeshire, circa 1730
REF: 1089
Made using choice timber, the top of two boards with ovolo-moulded edge, the single drawer inlaid with a flowing linear design in a pale timber (typically holly) with dot terminals, above a scroll-shaped apron, on baluster-turned legs, joined by upper edge-moulded stretchers, turned feet.
For examples of South-West Welsh oak furniture with this distinctive, delicate and restrained inlay, possibly from one particular workshop, see Richard Bebb, Welsh Furniture 1250 - 1850: A Cultural History of Craftmanship and Design (2007), Vol. II, pp. 66, 68-70. The author notes that 'the inlay was delicate and restrained, covering only a small area, relating to the space rather than merely filling it, and accentuated the main parts as opposed to using them as simply a base for ostentatious decoration.'
