An exceedingly rare Elizabeth I oak joint stool, circa 1580

REF: 3503

Sold

With reeded edge top, rails carved with leafy-filled lunettes, and inverted-baluster over ball-turned legs unusually foliate-carved, joined by plain stretchers all round.

Provenance: British private collection

Literature: For a comparable stool, formerly in the William Stokes private collection, see Tobias Jellinek, 'Early British Chairs and Seats 1500 to 1700' (2009), p. 224, pl. 283.

Most recorded Elizabethan oak joint stools have plain, reeded or fluted legs. Late 16th century English stools with foliate-carved legs are certainly the least common design to have survived.
