An unusual and striking George III 'primitive' armchair, Irish, circa 1780
REF: 4066
Of joined and Windsor chair construction, oak, with elm seat.
The gently curved back formed from two plain boards set directly into the seat, between large roundel finial uprights, which are through tenoned and pegged below the seat, and rise above the plain and slightly dished and curved top rail, the outsplayed and round-ended open arms again show-tenoned and pegged to the rear, on paired elliptical spindle supports connected to the seat, the four hand-shaped tapering legs mortice and wedged through the straight fronted slab seat.
The chair's method of construction shares features consistent with Irish agricultural manufacturing of similar date, for example the through tenons found on carts and gates. It was almost certainly made by a person who had deep knowledge of agricultural woodwork.
