A cushion showcasing a fragment of 18th century crewel embroidery, circa 1710-20

REF: 5074

The central panel of fine 18th century linen embroidered in coloured wools with a floral and foliate sprig, bordered by an 18th century woven silk braid, 17th century silk double tassel to each corner of the period panel, the whole set into a new deep rose coloured pure linen 'frame', backed with the same linen, feather-filled and sewn closed

Even small fragments of early needlework are becoming increasingly difficult to find and this cushion celebrates the timeworn imperfections of fragmentary antique textiles for their innate beauty: the 18th century linen has been painstakingly patched, whilst a small area of lost needlework alongside the four pink blossoms reveals the hand-drawn guidelines the embroiderer would have followed. From a distance these small signs of age vanish within the appeal of the overall design
