Ornate silver plate champagne bucket
6409
An ornate engraved silver plate champagne bucket with twin lion head handles, circa 1890.
Silver plate refers to a process in which a thin layer of silver is applied to the surface of a base metal, such as copper, brass, or nickel. This technique is used to create the appearance and feel of solid silver items at a lower cost.
Commonly found in tableware, jewellery, and decorative objects, silver plating was popularised in the 19th century. Although more affordable than sterling silver, silver plate requires care to prevent the silver layer from wearing away over time.
