A beautiful Art Nouveau cameo glass table lamp by Daum Nancy, France, dating to circa 1910. The richly coloured glass base is mounted in bronze and exemplifies the celebrated artistry of the Nancy school, whose work remains among the most admired achievements of French decorative art from the turn of the 20th century.
Daum Nancy lamps are prized for their extraordinary depth of colour and the subtle interplay of light through layered glass. Each was made by building up successive layers of coloured glass, then selectively acid-etching and carving the surface to reveal contrasting tones beneath. This demanding process gave Daum's designs their distinctive sense of atmosphere, whether depicting flowers, trees, landscapes, or other motifs inspired by the natural world.
The present lamp retains its original bronze mounts and has considerable sculptural presence, even without its original glass shade. Complete Daum Nancy lamps with matching period shades are highly sought after and can command substantial prices; nevertheless, this surviving base remains an elegant and authentic example of the firm's exceptional workmanship.
