19th century serpentine and glass candle stick
6283
A stylish 19th century Cornish serpentine and mercury glass candle stick, circa 1860.
Mercury glass, also known as silvered glass, is a decorative art form that originated in the mid-19th century. Despite its name, it doesn't contain mercury. Instead, it's created by double-walling glass and inserting a silver nitrate solution between the layers to achieve a reflective, metallic finish. Popular in Victorian homes, mercury glass was used for vases, candlesticks, and ornaments, prized for its affordability compared to real silver.
