Penny lick glass
Penny lick glass
6304
A late 18th century lead glass penny lick, circa 1780.
Penny lick glasses are small, thick-walled glass cups used from the 18th century to serve ice cream. Sold by street vendors for a penny, they had a shallow bowl, making portions appear larger. Due to hygiene concerns, as they were reused without proper cleaning, they were banned in the early 20th century.
