A plaster head of St Peter after the antique mounted on an oak plinth.

St. Peter, originally named Simon, was one of Jesus Christ's twelve apostles and is considered the first Pope by the Catholic Church. A fisherman by trade, Peter became a key figure in the early Christian Church. Jesus famously called him the "rock" upon which He would build His Church. After Christ's crucifixion, Peter led the apostles and spread Christianity. He was eventually martyred in Rome, crucified upside down, as he felt unworthy to die like Christ.
