19th century bamboo sword stick
6371
A late 19th century bamboo gentleman's sword stick with yellow metal collar and steel blade, circa 1890.
Sword sticks, or cane swords, originated in 18th century Europe, blending fashion with self-defence. Disguised as walking canes, they concealed blades inside, allowing gentlemen to carry a weapon discreetly when swords became less common in public. Popular among the upper class in Britain, France, and other European countries, sword sticks offered protection against street crime.
By the 19th and early 20th centuries, they became more of a novelty or collectible as firearms replaced bladed weapons for personal defence.
As an antique this complies with current UK law regarding bladed items. Age verification is required for all purchasers.
