An extremely decorative 1920s large scratch built weather vane in copper in the form of a sailing yacht. Currently mounted on a sandstone block but equally at home outdoors.

Weather vanes, used to show wind direction, have a history dating back to ancient Greece, where one of the earliest examples, the Tower of the Winds, was built in 50 BC. During the Middle Ages, weather vanes adorned church spires, often in the form of roosters, symbolising vigilance.

By the 18th century, they became popular decorative elements on barns and homes in Europe and America. Over time, weather vanes evolved into both functional instruments and artistic, folk art pieces.
