Late Ming Kraak bottle vase
6388
Late Ming Kraak bottle vase in blue and white porcelain depicting a seascape. Chinese circa 1600.
Kraak bottles, originating from the late 16th to 17th centuries, are distinctive porcelain vessels associated with the Dutch East India Company and trade with China. Named after the Dutch ships "kraak," which transported them, these bottles are characterised by their unique shape, often resembling a bulbous body with a narrow neck.
Decorated with intricate blue-and-white patterns, Kraak bottles were used for storing wine and other liquids. They reflect the cultural exchange between Europe and Asia during the Age of Exploration, becoming popular among collectors today.
