Early 20th century moai-style carving
6224
A perfectly weathered early 20th century hand carved sandstone sculpture in the style of the Easter Island moai statues. But no, this isn't the one that Captain Cook brought home with him!
Easter Island's Moai are monumental stone statues carved by the Rapa Nui people between 1400 and 1650 AD. These iconic figures, often with oversized heads, represent ancestral spirits and were believed to embody the authority and power of chieftains. Standing on stone platforms called ahu, they face inland, watching over the island's inhabitants.
